Symposium Details

Registration Fees:   The registration fee includes admission to all sessions of the symposium, tea breaks, lunch and a certificate of attendance.

Presentation Formats

Poster Presentation: Poster presentations allow presenters to present their research/ school programmes on a poster to be put up at the exhibition area for viewing. Time will be allocated for all authors of poster presentations to share their research/ school programmes with participants in an informal setting.
Edupreneur Fair: External vendors will be invited to set up booths at the exhibition area to showcase HE-related programmes suitable for schools. Schools that have worked with suitable vendors are encouraged to submit programmes for showcase at the Edupreneurs Fair. These may include:


Poster Presentation

The Association of Home Economists Singapore (AHES) invites authors to submit abstracts for poster presentations at the Home Economics (HE) Symposium 2008. Abstracts are welcomed in any area of HE education, including those that incorporate the symposium theme Home Economics as a Foundation for Human Capital Development.The sub-themes can take any of the following strands:


Call for Abstracts for Poster Presentation

You may submit abstracts from any of the following:

Research papers relevant to the theme of the symposium will be considered based on: research aims, methodology used, data collected, key findings and potential application of results. Recent graduates in tertiary Food and Nutrition programmes are encouraged to present their thesis/ dissertation projects on topics related to the theme or sub-themes of the symposium.

HE educators are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts to share good programmes, teaching pedagogy and classroom tools. Submissions relevant to the theme or sub-themes of the symposium will be considered based on educational objectives, description of pedagogy/teaching tools used, evaluation and potential usefulness to other educators.

Please provide a brief write-up if you intend to set up a booth at the Edupreneur Fair to showcase a program in which your school teamed up with an external organization. Representatives from the organization are strongly encouraged to be present at your booth to interact with participants.

Guidelines for Abstract Submission

The submitted abstract must be no more than 250 words.
At the top of the page, please include your full name, school, email, contact number and title of submission.
Authors may submit more than 1 abstract, submit each abstract separately.

Abstract Submission Deadline

All abstracts for poster presentations and the Edupreneur Fair must be submitted by 10 Feb 2008 to the Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Ms Johannah Soo, at johannah.soo@nie.edu.sg.

This event will be an important meeting place for HE educators, researchers, scholars, professionals, service providers and related organizations to exchange ideas and open opportunities for collaboration. We believe that both presenters and participants will benefit greatly through this symposium. Act now and register as this is a great opportunity for knowledge enhancement, professional development, networking and dialogue of new directions and novel ideas, and to further define our role as Home Economists in this new economy.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Tahira K. Hira

Dr. Tahira K. Hira
Executive Assistant to the President
Iowa State University

 

 

Dr. Tahira K. Hira serves as special and confidential advisor to Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy, as well as representing the president’s office to the university at large. In addition, Dr. Hira helps oversee external affairs offices such as the Alumni Association, the Athletic Department, University Relations, and University Marketing, including the planning and scheduling of special events. A professor of Personal Finance and Consumer Economics, she was Associate Vice Provost for ISU Extension before assuming her current position in 2001.

Dr. Hira received her PhD from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1976 and joined Iowa State University in 1980. She is internationally known for her research in consumer bankruptcy, consumer credit, the social and psychological aspects of borrowing among middle- and high-income Americans, the impact of gambling on family financial well-being, and credit use among college students, including student loans. She created Iowa State’s Financial Counseling Clinic, which conducts research and provides hands-on experience in research and counseling to both graduate and undergraduate students. She is founding president of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE).

Dr. Hira has been cited in many national and international papers, as well as on television and radio shows. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2004 University of Missouri Distinguished Alumni Award and Iowa State Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence in 1996. She has served on several national committees and boards, including the Institute of the Certified Financial Planners (ICFP), the Board of Standards and Practices for the Certified Financial Planners (CFP board), and the National Foundation for Consumer Credit (NFCC). Dr. Hira currently serves as president of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).
